Recognition Events

Smiling faces and a loud buzz of excitement filled the air as Site Coordinator Miriam Adrianowicz gathered her students at Sherman Elementary School. "It's been a great semester at Sherman. The tutors have been great and we were able to serve more students than planned," she said.
One tutor, Aimee Zimmerman said, "I didn't have any teaching experience prior to coming to Reading Partners but I've really enjoyed it. I appreciated the structure and ease of using the curriculum."
Reading Partners is finishing up its largest year to date with more than 850 students and more than 900 committed community volunteers. To celebrate, each of our 15 Reading Centers has honored our participants with their own gathering and book giveaway to start off the summer with a new book in hand.
Spotlight on a Pair
Juan is a bright, energetic and happy 6th grader. Every time he arrives with his tutor, Maury Denniston, into the reading center at Los Arboles Elementary School in San Jose, he is eager to begin the session. Juan loves to read, and has made amazing progress in the year he has been in the Reading Partners program.
Juan is the only student at Los Arboles who completed the entire comprehension curriculum and then began the reading and interpretation of novels. This is a significant achievement. His tutor has said, "Juan is reading so much better than he was, he really enjoys it! He is interested in a lot of subjects - I tell him that if he reads about things he likes, he will learn a lot about them."

For every child we see, we also need at least one tutor dedicating one hour out of their week to help the student. Thanks to these new volunteers, we will be able to help many more students with their reading.
